Quote from the WHICH web site

Steam Cleaners

A steam cleaner may be an indispensable gadget for a few, but our tests show most cleaning jobs are better tackled by the methods most of us have been using for years.

Steam cleaners haven't really caught on in the UK but they've been popular elsewhere in Europe for years (more than half the ones we tested come from Italy). They're now much more widely available here, and are offered under familiar brand names, such as Electrolux and Hoover. New they might be, but are they a useful addition to your cleaning cupboard?

Our Response

To a degree the WHICH report is true in as much as some of the machines that they have tested are less than useful (see our Help Me section regarding Branded v's VapourTek™) and the sad fact is that these are badged and sold by some of Europe's biggest brand names, in our view doing their customers a disservice. Our argument would be that the consumer is being ripped off by some of these suppliers because their steam cleaners are not dry steam, they are wet steam and these are not the same. The argument that you would be better off using traditional cleaning methods simply isn't true when compared to proper dry steam cleaners.

Dry steam as a cleaning medium is second to none. It is fair to say that in some instances dry steam needs a little help from a steel scrubber or a brass brush but dry steam will clean pretty much anything and is excellent at removing spot stains such as coffee, chocolate, red wine or even blood. The benefits to the allergy sufferer are tremendous for removing dust mites, bed bugs and even scrubbing the air and removing particulates from it in the case of water filtered steam vacuum systems.

To ensure that you buy a steam cleaner that does work and will provide a better service than traditional cleaning methods you need to be able to tick all items on your preferred system from the following list:

bullet

1.5 litres or water lasts 1 hour or more

bullet

Stainless steel boiler

bullet

Steam can be switched on and off via the handle

If the machine that you are looking at, whether it be a VapourTek™ system or another manufacturers reaches this criteria then this machine will work effectively. If it does not, take both the advice from WHICH and us - DO NOT BUY IT.
